So...I’m on tour with these two underground super-heavyweights: the one and only, Mr Harry Pussy himself, Bill Orcutt and super-brain, electronic-assassin Jessica (Can’t) Rylan. I’m pinching myself for the full week yeah?
We’d picked up Cian Nugent, Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaig and David Lacey on the way who sang, drank and told filthy jokes all the way from Bristol to London for our two day residency at Cafe Oto.
I’ll admit it, I was fairly anxious. This was my first visit to Oto and wasn’t sure what to expect but after loading in and settling down the vibe got all soft and mellow with the autumn sun streaming through those big windows.
I’d been building loops on the road and improvising in and around them so after a five minute soundcheck (one aux out – no panning, no messing) I sat outside with my tea and tried (unsuccessfully I’m sad to say) to record the gospel choir who were belting it out down the street.
Show time came quickly; I pulled up a chair, nodded a quick hello and let loose this 12 minutes of road-hardened tape mung.
Afterwards I traded some tapes, chatted, watched all the bands and drank some excellent beer. As we packed up John, who was doing sound that night, pushed a CDr into my hand (his handwritten note in the pic above). ‘I recorded your set’ he said, ‘you should have played longer’.
The next night I pulled out all the stops with a goofy vocal improv set. It was the last night of the tour and I wanted one last blast of freaky before I returned to normal life. I only got to 8 minutes before puffed out and red-faced I had to concede defeat. John shook his head. No recording exists.
Recorded on the hottest days in the longest year, "Radioactive Desire" is an avant-garde piece with an almost visceral impact. Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 5, 2021
