about

A collection of rare, newly discovered, unreleased or partially abandoned posset jams.

I’ve said it before but the compilation album is quite a beautiful beast; a home for all those one-offs, those not-quite-fitting curios that fall between the cracks on a hard drive.

Here’s a selection of tracks that for one reason or another, never made it onto a posset album. Some were lost (I found a bunch of CDr backups in an old mattress – truth!), some fell off soundcloud and a few were submitted to long out of print compilations.

Perhaps you can give them a listen, download them onto your device of choice and let they fly free into the clouds.

01 Man*chester Prac*tice. I think this must be from a show for those Psykick Dancehall lovelies in their Manchester studio space circa 2016/17. It was a braw night with one of my musical heroes, Jer Reid, playing a set and Part Wild Horses Mane on Both Sides hanging out therefore adding to the overall coolness vibe in this little gathering a thousand fold.

02 The Robber. A curious one. I was asked to play at a Robert Walser festival a few years ago. This recording formed part of my set, reading part of the story (The Robber) aloud with all the vowel sounds removed. It took a bit of doing but, from what I remember, the well-heeled literary crowd eventually started to really dig the hissing and hacking. Like I said, curious.

03 Binary Music with Variable Thumb Pressure. Guess this is a ‘technique piece’ with an on-off vocal huff played through the flattop tape deck with a gentle thumb on the button. Parts of this turned up on other compositions but this is the original muff.

04 (extract with) Ant Macari. I’ve been lucky enough to play a bunch of shows with carpenter, artist, instrument maker and mystic philosopher Ant Macari over the years. I’m guessing this was from TOPH in 2017. We’ve obviously got our wizards hats on.

05 Birthday Mung. Sorry. No idea what is going on here – rediscovered in the aforementioned mattress.

06 Man a Man a Mwnci. You ordered the textured balloon jam for Rhodri Davies? Coming right up madam!

07 When You Run Out of Names for Things. This was another one of the mattress finds. It’s a live recording for sure, possibly using Newcastle’s Noize Choir as a source. Apart from that, I have no idea.

08 Mish Frig. Especially made for the ‘Chew Me Chew’ compilation on Robert Ridley-Shackleton’s sadly-missed Hissing Frames label. Slight Christmas-y vibe?

09 Ectoplasm. I think this was supposed to be for an online comp. Never used.

10 Confessions of a Ghostly Ghost. Evidence of how things turn into other things. This was the base for what turned into ‘An illustrated history of soft explosions’ that appeared in 2019. Like one of those Wings tracks that highlight Linda’s backing vocals. Dig that fucking pony!

12 Tree Fellas. I think this was an encore from a show in Sheffield around 2015. It’s me, Luke Poot and Yol on pure throats: howling and honking, free as daises.

13 Breep BRAH. Vocal jam made for my TUSK hosting segment. I was in a hurry to finish it for a deadline and although pretty happy knew it needed a bit more mung. Consider this the finished – mung-heavy version
